California Interstate
Highway 5 the next
big vineyard boom ! Wineries of California has been observing for quite some
time now, that more and more larger vineyards are taking up the space where
desert once provided nothing more than wasted barren land. These lands are
still fertile from the ancient dry lakebed that once filled the San Joaquin
Valley. Is it good for the valley ? You Bet !
LOOKING BACK IN SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA WINE HISTORY / 1940 - Ruth Milliken, A Cucamonga Vineyardist that owned and operated
Cucamonga Vineyard. On the vineyard she raised three types of grapes..
Wine, table and raisin. Although she saw violent fluctuations in the price of
grapes, she remembers selling many tons for $100.00 per ton. She employed women
to do the picking. About 50 people were on her payroll at all times.
Pruning required big crews. At work, she wore boots, riding breeches,
a mannish shirt and a helmet. She was out in the vineyard from 7AM
until sunset and was sometimes called the "Padrona" (boss). She is
remembered as a true wine visionary.
